Meet My Sheer Beauty: The Magical Makeup Artist

Meet the magical makeup artist and now a dear friend of mine that is Britt of My Sheer Beauty. She doesn’t want you to book her over and over again- she wants to teach you the skills to apply your day to day look with confidence so that you feel those same vibes in front of your bathroom mirror. Read for her raw journey below including sharing about her miscarriages, the length of time it took her to start My Sheer Beauty, and the internal struggles she has overcame to get there.

1. Can you share a little of your journey with us and who you are?

My name is Britt Mediana! About six years ago I was working as a certified makeup artists taking appointments daily and just loving the artistry of makeup at Sephora! But I felt like I got the most satisfaction when a woman came in kind of frantic saying something like “ I need to buy like the newest product” or my favorite thing was when they would say “I can't wear that product” because it gave me a challenge to actually open their eyes to see themselves the way they have always wanted to see themselves. I always met these women who are just so insecure, but I wanted them to feel beautiful. I took that upon myself to really understand why they couldn't feel that way, or why they felt that they couldn't wear certain products. Ever since doing weddings and photo shoots and music videos, like anything that I did, that revealed to me what being a makeup artist truly is- it empowered me so much because afterwards, they always say I wish I could just take you home, or I wish you could do this to me every day, and it broke my heart. So six years later, here I am now, as a freelance makeup artist. I went through some like health issues, and I actually had a couple miscarriages. I was just dreaming of being a mom and for some reason, like the first thing that popped into my head was “oh my gosh, am I going to be that mom look with like messy hair?” I decided, “No I don’t want to be that typical mom that doesn't take care of herself or doesn't desire to take care of herself.” So after my second miscarriage, I really felt this like longing to help moms specifically and kind of rediscover their beauty and redefine what that means to them. It's a blessing to give to yourself and to your child when you take care of yourself.. But you shouldn't have to lose who you are and lose how you look because of that. This desire to help women redefine their beauty kind of became defined through my miscarriages and my many pregnancies for months specifically because I learned that a mom is literally the superhero of our time. She puts herself last and so what if I could just give her the tools to understand who she is and help her be competent to wear that beautiful lipstick just because she wants to feel beautiful.

2. Tell us about the mission of your brand- how does it empower women?

My Sheer Beauty is all about women owning their own beauty in the way that it is designed for them. So one of my favorite things to say is “What's in my makeup bag is not going to be in your makeup bag, but we can look just as beautiful together with what we need for ourselves.” We have to throw away all those stereotypes about makeup away and do it for yourself and make it customized for what you need, and how you need to feel beautiful in your own way.

3. What is the biggest challenge you’ve had to press through as a female entrepreneur? What are the steps you had to take to overcome it?

I think the biggest thing for me has been comparison and competitions. We're constantly competitive. Because we have so many things telling us how we should be, I think. And so for me, originally it took me six years to launch My Sheer Beauty mainly because I was so scared of the beauty industry and how they're are millions of people on YouTube doing makeup tutorials. I never wanted to do that because there's already millions of people, and I didn't. I felt inadequate enough. My husband is so amazing and has been my biggest supporter and kept pushing me to get My Sheer Beauty started. If you fail, then you fail, but at least you tried, and so I think him standing behind me and pushing me forward has been the most amazing thing that I could have ever asked for in business and life.

4. What sets your brand apart from others?

I think that my sheer beauty is different because as a makeup artist, my goal in the end is for a woman to not need me in the end to get ready for an event- she can do so on her own. The biggest things that’s different is most makeup artists want you to keep booking them to make money, but I do not want women to need me every single day of your life- I want them to not need me, and that is very counter cultural!

5. How do you collaborate with others working towards a better world?

I think collaboration needed and partnership is needed because we're not meant to do anything by ourselves. But I think to make a better world, collaboration has to be not focused on gaining something but focused on giving something. When I collab with someone, my goal is to give and not gain. If someone's contacting me and saying, “Hey, let's partner up! I'll give you this for that”, that's a huge indication that I shouldn't partner with them. It probably means that they just want the platform or they just want the extra people or that they said what they needed to say. My mission specifically for makeup is to be unbiased so that I can relate to as many people as I can. I think this would help build such a better world in the beauty industry so that no one is segregated. So it's not about collaborating or not- the question should be: Is it the right collaboration with the right people?

6. What advice would you give to female entrepreneurs in the beginning stages of launching their brand or business?

One person told me when you start a brand you are starting, add five years so you have the unresolved in mind. Remind yourself “I'm going to reach this goal! I'm going to make it happen! It's going to come, and you're hustling so hard and it's only been like two months but it takes a long time and it's not a sprint it's a marathon. Pace yourself. Slow down when you need to slow down, but see that when you need to speed up. It’s long term, not a get rich quick then. I have to remind myself of this everyday!
